Communicated with Mr. Stark,Deputy Magistrate ,
Who was then in charge of the DAMINI Forest in
Song hal Por ganas,and I also sent song hal servants , at my own cost,to the district' to find out whether song hala would be willing to come and settle in the waste
Lands of western Duars.
The reports which reached me made me hopefully that they would

Recommended,in my letter no.769G of the 4th January,1890,to the Dy.
Commissioner of Jalpaiguri ,that a Sonthal
Colony be started in Dhara.
১ লা মার্চ ১৮৯১সালে আলিপুরদুয়ার এ একটি সম্মেলন হয় গদাধর ও রায়ডাক নদীর মধ্যবর্তী অঞ্চলের সামুকতলায়।শামুক -তলা আলিপুরদুয়ার শহরের সামান্য কয়েক কিলোমিটার দূরে। সেখানে সাঁওতাল বসতি

সাঁওতাল কিছু অগ্রিম অর্থ ঋণ হিসেবে দেবার জন্য Rev. A.J.Shields এবং Mr. Heawood নামে দুই উদার ইংরেজ ভদ্রলোক অগ্রণী হন,
তাঁরা নিজেদের পকেটের থেকে এই ঋণ দান করেন।
১৮৯১ সালে Sunder সাহেবের উপস্থিতিতে ৫০০জন সাঁওতাল নরনারী
ও শিশুর দল শামুকতলায় তাদের বসতি পত্তন করেন।
সাঁওতাল পরগনা থেকে জলপাইগুড়ির মোঘলঘাট পর্যন্ত সাঁওতাল দের আনার
জন্য বাঙলার গভর্নর রেলওয়েতে ফ্রি পাস এর ব্যবস্থা করেছিলেন। এই সাঁওতাল চাষাবাদ করতেন।
তাঁদের রোজগার ছিল প্রতিদিন আট টাকা থ্যেকে দশ টাকা।
চা বাগানের পত্তম শুরু হলে
চা বাগানের কাজের জন্য সাঁওতালদের নিয়ে আসা শুরু হয়। প্রায় সব চা বাগানেই
সাঁওতাল পরিবার আছেন,কিন্তু গোষ্ঠীবদ্ধ জীবন
থ্যেকে বিচ্ছিন্ন হয়ে নিজস্ব স্বকীয়তা এখন আর সহজলভ্য নয়।চা বাগানের বাইরে সাঁওতালরা বসতি স্থাপন করেছেন ফালাকাটায়,
শালকুমারে,মাদারিহাটের খগেন হাটে সাঁওতাল পল্লী হয়েছে।উল্লেখযোগ্য সাঁওতাল
সংখ্যা রয়েছে চা বাগান গুলিতে।
